The Point-of-View method (POV) is a tool to capture and understand the perspective of customers, employees and other stakeholders in order to make better decisions.
The iterative innovation process can be divided into four phases: Discovery, Ideation, Validation and Scaling. This method belongs to the Discovery Phase and supports decision making.
how does the method work?
This method helps define the specific problem area for a challenge by creating a meaningful and actionable statement that focuses on user insights. The application leads to the following outcomes:
- Understanding who the beneficiaries are and what their needs are
- Elaboration of the rationale for the specific needs
The Point-of-View method is based on the assumption that the perspective and understanding of different stakeholders is important to gain a comprehensive understanding of an organization's challenges and opportunities. To apply the point-of-view method, the company asks for the perspective of various stakeholders and gathers their insights and experiences. In each case, make sure there is only one POV per persona or stakeholder group. This information is then analyzed to make better decisions.
Step by Step Guide
The Point-of-View method can be used in various areas of a company, for example in the development of marketing strategies, in the design of customer relationships or in the improvement of processes and workflows. In actual application, we usually start by filling the canvas and derive a POV statement based on it.
Define the user person with attributes that are as precise as possible
Feel into the needs of the person and collect them in the middle column of the canvas
In the last column, collect the reasons for the needs
Now translate these insights into a statement that can assist in exploring solutions.
The POV should be broad enough that there is a wide range of solutions, but narrow enough that there is a helpful boundary. In this way, a wide range of relevant solutions can be explored. This method is often used in combination with other methods, such as design thinking or the customer journey map.
