Usually it’s about combining ideas and concepts that already exist in new, transformative ways.

  • The printing press was created in the 1430s Johannes Gutenberg. He combined several pre-existing technologies: a screw press (used to squeeze grapes to make wine) and metal moveable type (type had been used before but always with wooden blocks, which wore down quickly).
  • Picasso’s Bull’s head 1942 is a rusty set of handle bars and bicycle seat which he found next to each other on a pile of miscellaneous objects. Bernard D. Sadow, a frequent traveller created rolling suitcases in 1970 after observing an airport worker moving a heavy machine on a cart.

See let's use the power of combination to see which ideas we can generate for LHG or your own business area by stealing the superpowers of other heroes…You can do this by yourself, or in a team (2 -10 people). We created a card deck with ready-made heroes (see download), but you can can also do it on the fly by following the instructions below. You'll need post-its and pens to collect your ideas. You can do this exercise in a small group in 30 minutes.STEP ONE – Collect your HeroesWrite down as many 'heroes' as you can think of in 3 minutes. Think of companies, organisations and people that you admire. Go your quantity and don't over think it.(You can use the cards (att) for inspiration or think up your own)STEP TWO – Identify the Superpowers! Now that you have a pile of heroes before you, quickly brainstorm as many superpowers as you can think of for the company or person depicted. (Even if you don’t know the hero well, you should still be able to deduce some strengths and defining features. Or you can simply make them up! E.g. this start-up's superpower seems to be it's clear value proposition, this person has tons of courage!! Write down all of the superpowers that come to mind on post-its. Time-box it again for 3-5 minutes.STEP THREE – Steal the Superpowers!!Now, consider how you might ‘steal’ these superpowers for your business area or to the LHG in general. As yourself: If we had this superpower we could….  Again, collect all of your ideas on post-its. Take a minute to reflect by yourself or as a team on your most insightful result(s) and use it as the basis of a second ideation round, considering how you might achieve this goal.
