The Scamper Method is a creativity technique based on the assumption that all new ideas are modifications of something existing.

Using seven different perspectives on an existing idea or solution, the Scamper Method specifically triggers new ways of thinking in order to generate ideas in the context of a brainstorming session, for example. The method allows participants to break away from established thought patterns in a structured way and look at existing ideas or solutions from a different perspective. Unlike the Disney method, participants can switch between different ways of thinking without limiting themselves to one particular approach.

how does
the method work?

Starting from an existing idea or solution, the Scamper Method can be used to generate further ideas for improvement or further development. "Scamper" is the acronym for the seven different perspectives of the method:

  • Substitute: What if we replace parts of the solution? (components, people, etc.)
  • Combine: What if we combined the solution with other existing ones? (products, services, functions, processes, etc.)
  • Adapt: What if we adapt the solution to a different context? (target group, process, etc.)
  • Modify: What if we change the solution completely? (Form, shape, target group, etc.)
  • Put to another use: What if we repurpose the solution for another purpose or market?
  • Eliminate: What if we eliminated the parts of the solution and simplified it?
  • Reverse: What if we turn the solution upside down and assume an opposite use?

Step by Step Guide

1

Introduce the initial idea or solution to create a common understanding for all participants.

2

Take the first perspective and collect ideas individually within 3 minutes and put them on the canvas.

3

Repeat this for all other perspectives and share your ideas in the group at the end and answer any questions you may have.

4

Decide on the ideas you would like to continue working with (e.g. dot voting, prioritisation matrix).

This is an example process for applying the scamper method. Adjustments can be made to the time, brainstorming method (individual brainwriting or joint, open brainstorming) or even the process (sharing ideas after each perspective or all perspectives at once instead of one after the other).
