With Flip the Future you will end up with a list of flipped facts and how they could be true. The method challenges assumptions about the future and generates innovative ideas by systematically reversing present-day realities.
how does the method work?
Step by Step Guide
This method helps you and your team to challenge assumptions, identify potential drivers of change, and envision a broader range of possible futures beyond simple linear projections.
Define a Focal Topic: Choose a specific object, system, trend, or challenge to explore
List Current Facts: Brainstorm and list as many things (ideally up to 100) that are true about the topic today and will not change in the next 10 years.
"Flip" the Facts: For each statement, rewrite it to be its complete opposite or a plausible alternative for the future. This is the creative, future-thinking step, so don’t be afraid to think the unthinkable. Try to be as ridiculous a possible at first.
Explore the "Why": For the most interesting or provocative "flipped" facts, ask why or how that future could come to be true. Use current signals of change to build a story around this new reality.
How did we get here? What evidence can we see around us now?
Work together to identify how some of your assumptions might change and any possible signals of change that might already exist.
