When we talk about innovation, we also talk about the culture of the organisation.

Culture is made up of the behaviors, values, and attitudes of everyone in the organization. To build an innovative organization, start by looking at behaviors.

how does
the method work?

There are three levels to consider: outcomes, behaviors, and enablers/blockers. Don't start by saying "we need more idea contests", instead focus on the outcomes you want and the behaviors you need to achieve them. Then look at the things that enable or block those behaviors.

Enablers include things like leadership, organizational design, innovation practice, and technology & data.

  • Leadership involves strategic guidance and resource allocation for testing new business ideas.
  • Organizational design determines how innovation is placed on the org chart, whether new ideas have access to customers, and the rewards and incentives for innovation.
  • Innovation practice involves the processes for managing ideas, de-risking, and developing skills for innovators.
  • In today's digital world, technology and data are also important enablers for innovation.

Step by Step Guide

The exercise aims to start a reflection on our own organisation(s) and particularly the specific innovative behaviours we already see today. We also identify behaviours you want to see more of. Start with the behaviours in each exercise and only briefly, time permitted, add outcomes and enablers afterwards. With this canvas you define in three steps the behaviour for an innovative company:

1

Reflect on examples of innovative behaviors you see at your organisation. Use the canvas to add behaviors, outcomes and enablers. Be specific, e.g. “we generated x growth ideas at workshop y”.

If your innovative behavior did not lead to desired positive outcomes, reflect on potential blockers and write those down as well.

2

Collect 3 – 5 behaviors you would like to see more of based on the examples: Use the canvas to add current blockers and outcomes you seek to drive.

3

Put the behaviors you want to see more of in order by prioritizing the one you want to see more of the highest!
