The Problem Statement is a problem definition tool that provides a focused basis for the generation of relevant ideas and solutions by simplifying a complex problem.
It identifies the gap between the current status and the target picture of a product or service.
The iterative innovation process can be divided into four phases: Discovery, Ideation, Validation and Scaling. The Problem Statement Method belongs to the Discovery Phase and supports the problem definition.
Wie funktioniert diese Methode?
People often tend to jump directly to solutions to a problem. The Problem Statement Method focuses on creating an understanding of the actual problem and helps to break down its complexity. Especially within a group, the Problem Statement supports the development of a common understanding of the problem. By agreeing on a specific problem, a focus can be created for subsequent steps to generate ideas and solve the problem. A well-formulated Problem Statement can act as a north star for the rest of the process and provide the right direction in finding a solution. In addition, the Problem Statement Canvas provides a good basis for presentation of a project or plan to stakeholders.
Schritt-für-Schritt Anleitung
The Problem Statement consists of two parts: the description of the problem space and the solution space that can address the problem. There are two steps to formulating the problem statement:
Focus on the user of your product or service and answer the 4 W questions:
- Who is affected?
- What are the problems and challenges?
- Where or when does the problem occur?
- Why is it important to get this problem solved?
The answers to these questions provide the basis for formulating the Problem Statement. It consists of the description of problem space and the solution space. First, condense the essence of the problem in one sentence to describe the problem space. Second, open up the solution space by framing it with one sentence. For both, please pay attention to the following aspects:
- Keep it short and use no more than one sentences that together cover all four W-questions.
- Remain concrete to create a clear and unambiguous formulation (which does not yet offer concrete solutions)
- But stay open enough to leave room for innovation and creativity
