STEP Canvas

With the STEP Canvas, trends can be categorised according to their current degree of prevalence (industry, mainstream, fringe) and their areas of impact (society, technology, economy or politics).
This creates a basis for dealing with these trends and their interrelationships in order to discover new business opportunities.
Wie funktioniert diese Methode?
Use the STEP Canvas to categorize trends according to their origin, where they come from and what drives them, as well as their degree of prevalence. The STEP Canvas uses four categories for the origin:
- Social trends, driven by factors such as consumer behavior, demographics, lifestyle, but also advertising
- Technological trends, driven by new technologies in areas such as communication, energy and transportation, as well as research and innovation in general
- Economic trends, driven by economic changes such as interest rates, inflation and taxes, but also by consumer power, new business models and start-ups
- Political trends, driven by states and associations of states such as the EU, but also other phenomena such as political movements
With the STEP Canvas, trends can be categorized into three different areas depending on their current degree of prevalence:
- "Fringe" area or peripheral area: this comprises trends that are still very new and progressive
- "Mainstream" area: this includes trends that are known to the majority
- "Industry" area: this includes trends that are already widespread in the respective industry
The categorization allows you to get an overview. The subsequent examination, field by field, enables you to discover new business opportunities in a structured way and to recognize the influences of the various trends on each other. The STEP Canvas is a snapshot for categorizing the trends. Feel free to use the initial STEP Canvas as a starting point for later iterations.
Schritt-für-Schritt Anleitung
Prerequisite: To be able to categorize trends, you need to know the trends you want to categorize. To do this, collect topics in advance as part of a small research project or collection, which you can then categorize using the STEP Canvas.
Choose a topic for which you and your team would like an overview of trends and opportunities (e.g. Internet of Things or process technologies).
Collect all the topics and trends that you and your team can think of for this trend. Use a separate sticky note for each topic.
Categorize the collected topics/sticky notes into the respective areas: Society, Technology, Economy or Politics and "Fringe" area, "Mainstream" area or "Industry" area. This will give you an initial overview and differentiation between the topics.
Then go through each field again individually and fill it in. Start with the "Industry" area and work your way up to the "Fringe" area. Here you will quickly come up with new topics by working together in the group.
Finally, it is worth emphasizing dependencies and thematic connections (e.g. a trend may already be in the "mainstream" area in terms of technology and society, but a related topic may still be in the "fringe" area politically. At the same time, the movement of the political aspect into the "mainstream" area would also be the starting signal for the technological transition into the "industry" area). The final discussion will give you insights into dependencies and opportunities for your business area.
